AI startup story: Thibaut and Zoé joined Deepomatic full-time after their 6-month internships
Choosing the right company for you is no easy task.
Many people ask about what it’s like to work at Deepomatic and in the French Tech ecosystem. So, today we interview Zoe and Thibaut, two former interns who then decided to continue their adventure as full-time employees at our AI startup. They will tell us about their experience and answer some of the most recurring questions about being part of the Deepo squad.
Why did you join Deepomatic in the first place?
Zoé: I heard about Deepomatic by chance. I was looking for an internship in AI or Deep Learning to validate my degree at EPITA and I didn’t want to work for a large company. After 2 days of research, Kevin Le Dû, an old friend of mine, called me. He told me the start-up he was working for was hiring in the visual search engine team. It was perfect for me! After two interviews, one with the three founders and a technical one with Vincent Delaitre, the CTO, I was in.
The day I was hired, Deepomatic was throwing a party to celebrate their departure from their incubator (Agoranov). They invited me to come so I could meet the whole team in a friendly environment.
To sum up, I came to Deepomatic for the technical challenges and the “startup spirit”.
Thibaut: I joined Deepomatic to work on the company’s ad-tech product and to validate my Master in Data Science from ENSAE ParisTech. In the beginning, I managed the huge amount of data we were recording from the customers interacting with our product.
I decided to join Deepomatic for two reasons. First, I was fascinated by the technical and scientific challenges the company was facing. Secondly, I had an exceptional fit with the Deepo team.
What have you been working on during your internship?
Thibaut: I started working on Mongo pipelines to process the huge amount of data we were recording on e-commerce and publishers’ websites.
After a few weeks, the strategy of the company shifted and so I started working on more research-oriented projects. These projects ranged from the semi-automation of fashion images annotation to the performance assessment of a perfect match engine between two images of 2D objects. Finally, I also worked on prototyping a 3D object perfect match engine for pieces of art in museums.
Zoé: I worked on a lot of different problems during my internship. At first, I mostly worked on small (but very useful) features and tested their implementation to understand the complete architecture of our search engine.
Eventually, I started to implement more critical features such as continuous deployment. I also performed research-related tasks like a 2D perfect match.
What’s the most interesting technical challenge you’ve worked on since joining?
Zoé: I don’t know honestly! Once, I worked on building, training and deploying some classifiers directly for a client. It was very different from training “toy” classifiers for school projects.
I’ve also liked to work on the 2D perfect match engine very much. I read lots of papers and documents to implement and optimize a version of the program that could be used in production.
I faced two major challenges. First the research part. I had to search deeply on the internet (page 15 and more on Google) to find the most accurate information on the subject. Then the implementation. The first version of the program was too slow to be used in production. So I had to find every possible trick to make it faster.
Thibaut: Discovering the deep learning tools that we use at Deepomatic was quite challenging, but also been very rewarding, especially when I started to train a deep neural network for automating the annotation of fashion images.
What has changed since you’re no longer an intern?
Zoé: The pay mostly! Now I have more responsibilities and I am more independent. When I started my internship at Deepomatic, my goal was already to stay thereafter. I think my supervisor Vincent Delaitre really prepared me for that during my six-month internship. When I started working full-time, it didn’t feel like a big turn for me. It was natural.
Thibaut: My position has evolved quite significantly over the past months. I’m now a Product Manager and I like it a lot. Every day my challenge is to set up a product organisation in a small star-tup that has always worked without any formal process.
What has been your best experience at Deepomatic?
Thibaut: Definitely the seminar in Morocco last June. I had joined only one month before and it’s been a really great experience to spend one week with all the team in an amazing place!
Zoé: I totally agree with Thibaut. The seminar was awesome! I had started my internship not much before him and it was truly amazing to really know each team member so quickly.
During the seminar, we talked a lot about the future of Deepomatic and the spirit of the company. It was really interesting, as an intern, to participate in those discussions and to feel part of a wonderful team.
